In this difficult year that our Kurdish nation is going through, and the momentous events and major challenges it has witnessed, Kurds at home and in the diaspora stand united, renewing their adherence to the values of freedom, equality and living in dignity, and affirming their determination to preserve their legitimate rights under the principles of justice and law.

This year, Nowruz appears to us carrying with it meanings of hope and renewal, and evoking the symbolism of Kawa the blacksmith who demolished with his pickaxe the castle of injustice, so that Nowruz remains an eternal symbol of the victory of truth over tyranny.

This holiday, which has been celebrated by the Kurds for thousands of years, has been an occasion that embodies the meanings of freedom, peace and the beginning of a new life.

Nowruz also gained a global dimension after its inclusion in 2009 on the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The United Nations General Assembly also indicated, in its resolution issued in 2023, that more than 300 million people around the world celebrate Nowruz.

Throughout history, Nowruz has been a symbol of steadfastness and challenge for the Kurdish people. During periods of oppression and tyranny, and despite attempts to ban its celebration, the Kurds continued to commemorate this occasion by setting fires to the towering mountain peaks of Kurdistan, expressing their rejection of injustice and their aspiration for a future in which our people would enjoy their legitimate rights, freedom, and dignity, like all other peoples of the world.

For the Kurdish people, Nowruz represents a station in which their pain and hopes are embodied, and in which the values of sacrifice and the struggle for justice and freedom are manifested.

We, at the Kurdish Lawyers Union, extend our warmest congratulations to the Kurdish people in all their locations, and we also congratulate the entire world on the advent of Nowruz International Day, stressing the need to respect the rights of the Kurdish people in accordance with the principles of international law and the right of peoples to self-determination, as stipulated in international conventions and agreements.

We also renew our call to enshrine the rights of the Kurdish people in national constitutions, and to work to build a future based on the foundations of justice, democracy and peace.

Every Nowruz and you are well.

Glory and immortality to the martyrs of the Kurds and Kurdistan.
