Based on our professional and ethical responsibility, and in accordance with the principles of international humanitarian law and human rights, the Kurdish Lawyers’ Union affirms its commitment to protecting civilians and their rights in Rojava Kurdistan, and to opposing grave violations, including siege, forced displacement, demographic change, and destruction of property. The Kurdish people, through their local forces, have played a pivotal role in combating terrorism and stabilizing the region in cooperation with the International Coalition, which creates a legal and moral obligation to protect them in line with the principles of civilian protection and the protection of allies.
In this context, the Union welcomes the draft legislation title “Save the Kurds Act” announced by U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, which aims to adopt legal and legislative measures to protect Kurdish civilians and prevent them from being subjected to violations that threaten their lives, security, and existence.
The Union emphasizes that this bill, and any similar initiative if enacted, represents a practical commitment to the principles of international humanitarian law, in particular:
* The protection of civilians during armed conflicts.
* Preventing impunity for grave violations.
* The responsibility of the international community to prevent serious crimes, including ethnically based genocide, and to support the Kurdish people’s right to self-determination.
Accordingly, the Kurdish Lawyers’ Union calls on international legislative institutions—foremost among them the United States Senate—to support initiatives aimed at protecting civilians, promoting justice, and safeguarding human dignity without discrimination.
The Union also reaffirms its continued commitment to documenting violations in accordance with recognized legal standards and to cooperating with relevant human rights and legal bodies, in the belief that respect for the rule of law is the foundation for achieving lasting peace and stability.
