Shelling of Kurdish Villages Southeast of Kobani: Targeting Civilians and Preventing Aid to Victims

On 26 January 2026, at approximately 11:30 p.m., and In another crime no less horrific, the village of Al-Jalabiyah and Kharab Ashk, southeast of the city of Kobani, were subjected to a violent attack involving intense and indiscriminate shelling that targeted the homes of Kurdish civilians in Kharab Ashk. The attack was carried out by forces and factions affiliated with the Syrian Temporary State Authority, with direct aerial cover from a Turkish drone.

The shelling continued for long hours throughout the night, resulting in the killing and wounding of civilians—the majority of them women and children—in addition to preventing medical aid to the injured and the rescue of those trapped under the rubble, due to the ongoing bombardment and continuous aerial surveillance.

According to survivor testimonies:

Civilian homes were directly and deliberately targeted.

A room sheltering women and children was shelled while they were asleep.

Heavy and varied weapons, including drones, were used.

Civilians were prevented from rescuing the wounded due to the continued shelling.

Names of the Wounded:

1. Sharihan Haj Mahmoud – 32 years old

2. Fatima Haj Mahmoud – 17 years old

3. Masoud Sheikh Bozan – 5 years old

4. Nisreen Mustafa – 25 years old

5. Mohammed Sheikh Bozan – 35 years old

6. Rasho Bozan Kadro – 65 years old

Among the wounded are four civilian suffering amputations and severe injurie caused by shrapnel and shelling.

Another crime was also committed in the village of Sharbanieh, where the shelling of the home of the elderly Kurdish woman Salwa Haj Mahmoud led to his immediate deaths.

These crimes—substantiated by direct testimonies and clearly identified victims—constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law and clearly amount to war crimes and crimes agains humanity, including:

* Deliberate killing of civilians

* Extrajudicial executions

* Targeting of women and children

* Preventing medical aid to the wounded

* Use of heavy weapons in populated civilian areas

Accordingly, the Kurdish Lawyers Union calls for:

An immediate and Independent international investigation

Holding all direct and indirect perpetrators accountable

Ending the policy of impunity

Providin urgent international protection for Kurdish civilians

Ignoring these crimes encourages their repetition and places the international community before a legal and moral responsibility that cannot be evaded.

The blood of civilians is not numbers, and the lives of children are not bargaining chips.
